Women workers pose with the painted dogs at a dog grooming store in Wuhan in central China’s Hubei province Saturday (July 11).

It is estimated that the money spent on pets has seen a nearly 500% increase between 1999 and 2008 in China.

It is common practice for pet owners to take their beloved dogs to grooming parlours where the little creatures are not just given a shampoo and cut — but a full-on, multi-coloured fur job.

The release of these photos come in the same week as China drafted its first law on animal protection.
