Every October, hundreds of thousands of locals and spectators flood the city of Naha in Okinawa province to watch the Ryukyu Kingdom Festival Tsunahiki (translates as Rope Pulling Ritual).
Hundreds of local workers spend months weaving together rice straw into thin ropes to create the two sections of the monster 656 ft ‘rope’, which costs over $170 000 to make.
Each ‘team’ is made up of 15 000 people and the rope has to be lifted into position by industrial cranes. After the competition, which encourages fertility in the people and the fields, the rope is shredded and bits are collected by locals as good luck symbols.
