The body of Shaniya Davis has been found and her mother was in court on Monday (November 16) to face initial charges of offering her daughter for sex.
Searchers found the body of the missing 5-year-old girl near Sanford, in central North Carolina. She was reported missing last Tuesday.
Shaniya’s 25-year-old mother Antoinette Davis is charged with human trafficking and felony child abuse.
An accomplice by the name of Mario Andrette McNeill will face kidnapping charges. Surveillance footage showed the 29-year-old carrying Shaniya at a Sanford hotel. As a result, another man who was arrested last week has been freed.
No word on the cause of death. One searcher says her body was found in woods near a deer carcass.
Meanwhile, Shaniya’s father, Bradley Lockhart, said over the weekend that he raised his daughter for several years but last month decided to let her stay with Davis.
The heartbroken father tells the AP: “I should’ve never let her go over there.”
