A tumour is shown to the press ahead of the operation at Xijing Hospital in Xi’an, China.

A Chinese woman is to have surgery to remove a 25 kilogram tumour on her back. Sun Fengqin, from Inner Mongolia, said she was born with a yellow birthmark on her back. “My family didn’t pay attention to it, but it grew bigger with age. By the time I was 20 years old, the tumour had grown into the size of a rice bag.”

Sun said the tumour is so big and heavy that it now hangs down covering her bottom and pulling her downward, making it hard to even walk. “I have to push my body forward when walking.” The 47-year-old said she seldom goes out since people call her “tortoise woman.”

“I’ve been carrying the 20kg tumour for nearly 30 years,” she added. “It’s always been a dream for me to remove it.”

When sleeping, Sun could only crouch down or kneel on the bed. Plastic surgeon Guo Shuzhong of Xijing Hospital said his patient suffers from a nerve fabric tumour, which could only be removed surgically. “The main risk is mass hemorrhage. During the surgery we possibly need to transfuse 8000-10 000cc of blood, which is equal to three times the blood in her body.”

The spokesman of the hospital said considering the economic situation of Sun’s family, they’ll waive the surgery fee for her.
