An elderly Chinese couple overtook the Guinness World Record holders for the world’s longest marriage of a living couple by being married for 85 years.

The husband Liu Fuben, 95, and the wife, Shi Jihui, 100, have been living together for 85 years, although in the old times they never had a marriage license.

In 1924, 10-year-old Liu married his fiancée Shi, who is five years older than her husband.

“In our village at that time, men used to marry at a very young age while the wife should be a several years older than the man so she can better take care of the family,” said 64-year-old Liu Shuxi, their son.

The couple altogether gave birth to six children, but only two survived due to poverty and disease in the old times.

“My mother takes very good care of my father. She would feed him for each meal, and chat to him close to his ears,” Liu added.

In 2005, Guinness World Record announced a British couple, Percy Arrowsmith, 105, and Florence Arrowsmith, 100, who have been married for 80 years, as the longest marriage of a living couple, however, Percy died only two weeks after the Guinness claim.
